Practicum Hours Reflection

The first 25 hours of my practicum were dedicated to completing Assessment 2, which focused on professional nursing identity and core nursing values. During this time, I noted daily practice and clinical interactions of nurses and other health care professionals and reflected on the practice of core nursing values of integrity, compassion, advocacy, and social justice. To understand the development of professional identity in practice, I engaged my colleagues and preceptors in informal discussion. I have spent the next 25 hours completing Assessment 3, which relates to person-centred self-care, management, and motivational interviewing. During the 25 hours of the practicum, I identified a practicum client, a 54-year-old Hispanic Male, recently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. I conducted a preparatory self-care and management practice interview, using the OARS, and reviewed the existing literature on self-care management and the emerging and existing health care technologies of diabetes management and continuous glucose monitoring, as well as diabetes management mobile applications. During this time, I obtained and reviewed Mr. R’s health history and prepared for the interview.

The last 25 hours of the practicum were used to complete Assessment 4, which is a review of the organizational environment I will be working in, and my personal reflections on the style of leadership I will adopt in this environment. As I completed the hours for my practicum, I analyzed the workplace culture at my assigned practicum site, team member and staff member well-being, the dynamics of staff member working relationships, and pre-existing quality improvement activities at my practicum site using informal focus groups and discussions with staff, and by assessing the agency’s policies on employee health and well-being. The information I collected during my practicum was compiled into a PowerPoint presentation that included an evidence-based approach to creating and implementing workplace well-being strategies, Kotter’s 8-Step Change Model, the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle of quality improvement, and a reflective evaluation of my leadership and change management skills. The last 25 hours of my practicum were to finalize the consolidation of learning, the completion of outstanding clinical duties, and submission for my practicum hours as described by Assessment 5. All 100 hours of my confirmed practicum hours have been documented in the Capella Academic Portal (CAP) with my preceptor’s signature, confirming that I have fulfilled all practicum requirements for this course.
